Let Them Eat Turkey Surprise

December 1, 2010

What is it about the poor and working class that makes Republicans hate them so much?

It's almost like real food!!

For anyone still confused about what Social Security has to do with the deficit, I’ll clear it up for you in one word

That’s right, Social Security has absolutely nothing to do with the deficit.  It is financed through a separate withholding called the payroll tax, or FICA, the surplus of which is deposited into a trust fund.  Social Security has been running a surplus now for 25 years, and unless that fund is depleted the program will not have to ask congress for additional funding    That fund, according to the program actuaries, will remain solvent through 2037 and possibly well beyond that without doing anything.  According to the Congressional Budget Office, if we properly tax all income, as opposed to just the first $106,800, it will remain solvent until 2083.  That a long fucking time.

There is NO Social Security crisis.  None.  Any problems involving that program can be eliminated by making the rich pay their full share.

So why are Social Security cuts and retirement age increases featured so prominently in the Deficit Reduction Commission’s report?

Because Republicans hate poor people, and fight to demolish any programs that might actually let them live with even a speck of comfort or dignity.

This entire cat food commission fiasco was simply a tool to put Social Security on the chopping block without having to address any of our real fiscal problems.  Wars, tax cuts for the rich, corporate welfare, useless defense spending, none of these are a problem for the “fiscal conservatives” in Congress.  But unemployment insurance, Medicare, Social Security, jobs programs, we simply can’t afford any of that.  It would be irresponsible to allow the poor and unemployed to get relief from the government.  They might appreciate it and turn out to vote against Conservatives.  By god we can’t have that!!

We don’t demolish a building because we think it might collapse a hundred years from now.  “Saving” Social Security by destroying it is the same thing, except there’s a couple hundred million people in it when it blows up.

Alan Simpson…  Yet another in a growing list of Conservative Sociopaths I’m ashamed to say are from Wyoming.

At least make them laugh as you’re circling the toilet bowl, right? Seriously, what’s happening in America is a crying shame, and if it was being perpetrated by someone other than Americans, nothing less than war would suffice to punish it. Unfortunately, it IS being perpetrated by Americans who are too lazy or stupid to question what they are told, and who don’t know better than to believe that America can get control of its runaway spending by privatizing Social Security.

I don’t know what you can do about it, and if I had to guess, I’d say nothing. The ignorant and fearful are just going to have to be fooled by the Republicans again, and even that might not be enough to wise them up. The problem is that the country really is going broke; against such a framework, it’s nothing short of incredible that anyone can still suggest tax cuts are the way to fix that without being promptly stoned to death.
